In a recent research study published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation (December 1, 2014), Paul M. Coen et al. found out that people who included walking in their routine may cut down risks of diabetes and improve their cardiac health more than those who led a sedentary lifestyle. According to the lead author Paul M. Coen, the common belief is that bariatric surgery is a panacea for diabetes and weight problems. However, this research study shows that there is further room for health improvements through exercising. The study states that exercising helps in improving insulin sensitivity and glucose effectiveness.

Walk Your Way to Good Health

Walking is an easy way to kick-start your exercise program. Starting with short 5-minute walks, you may gradually increase the distance and duration as you lose more weight. You may also include low-impact aerobics such as spinning and swimming in your exercise schedule as you build on your fitness.

Go Easy on Strength Training

While strength training helps tone the body, build muscles, and maintain muscle mass, according to Cleveland Clinic, lifting weights or indulging in other forms of strength-building exercises is not recommended for at least three months after bariatric surgery.

Stay Motivated, Stay Fit

Here are some tips to develop a post-bariatric surgery exercise plan:

  • Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise every day.
  • Include a variety of programs in your fitness regimen to break the monotony.
  • Go easy on yourself and have realistic expectations.
  • Have a plan-B ready in case of any obstacles.
  • Make someone your accountability buddy and fitness partner.

Note – Before you begin any exercise program, consult your doctor.
