Pea-Based Protein Powder after Weight Loss Surgery

Medically Reviewed by Katelyn J. Mock, US-Registered Dietician (R.D.)

Question: My friend used a pea-based protein powder after bariatric surgery. Is this a good protein to use?

Our Registered Dietitian Answers:

The pea, hemp, and bean protein powders can be a good source of additional protein when used in a balanced diet. However, after surgery your stomach is much smaller and the hemp, bean, pea proteins don’t contain all the essential amino acids that the body needs. This means that they are not complete proteins. And, because your volumes are limited after surgery, I recommend patients to use a protein powder that does have all the essential amino acids. Complete protein powders are whey protein isolate or concentrate and soy protein isolate or concentrate.
